Northeast Frontier Railway officials have come up with an innovative idea to try and keep elephants off the train tracks. They have dubbed the idea, “Plan Bee”.
Faced with the problem of elephants dieing on the tracks as they wandered onto the railway tracks, they have used audio of bees swarming to deter them. Having used them for a few years now, the number of elephants dieing or injured has come down dramatically.
More than 50 such points have been set at known elephant corridors. The sound is played when trains are approaching of if locals find a herd in danger. As elephants mive away from swarming bees to safety, the sound makes them move away.
